On The Real Presence

He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has life everlasting.
John 6:55

That is, he who meditates on my death and following my exampe, mortifies his members which belong to this earth, has eternal life.

Bernard

Bernard was intent on cultivating a readiness for the presence of the Word through meditative and ascetical preparations for the unmerited 'visit' of the Bridegroom in contemplation. (memoia Christi)

Christ is both exemplum and sacramentum: if the faithful separate imitation of Christ from the sacramental mystery, there can be no divine union.
